Happy Independence Day!

The Farmhouse will be closed on Friday, July 4, in celebration of Independence Day.  Here’s to honoring our great country’s past, present, and future;
enjoying backyard barbecues and picnics with friends;
and soaking up some of those summertime rays by the water!

We’ll see you at 9:00 a.m. for that post-celebration recovery brunch
on Saturday, July 5 — until then, be safe and be well, friends!

Sour Beer at The Farmhouse!

Our staff got to geek out a bit on sour beers today with our friendly MoBev rep!

2014-06-24_liquor-training

We learned about the history of the sour-beer brewing method (did you know it’s historically been much like making sourdough bread, leaving the beer fixins in the kitchen window to collect local yeasts for brewing?), and some interesting details about a few of the sours we’ll have in-house soon (if not already).  If you come by this weekend, we’ll be sure to have some interesting sours for you to try with your summertime repast!

We have the St. Louis Framboise in bottles now (you may recall that we used to have that on tap), which is a bright-pink raspberry sour that pairs wonderfully with our artisanal cheese plate.  Its low alcohol content makes it the perfect thirst-quenching aperitif.  There’s the 1809 Berliner Weisse, a tart sour that’s not too sugary; perfect for brunches.  The VanderGhinste Oud Bruin (“old brown”) is a Flanders brown that’s been made by mixing a newly-brewed batch of brown beer to lambic that’s been aged in oak barrels for 18 months (this is an historic brewing method which increased stability and shelf life in the time before refrigeration).  It’s got more of a toasty, malty flavor, and would pair well with our short rib or hanger steak.  We’ll also have the Duchesse de Bourgogne, a Flanders red made in small batches, which is reminiscent of the flavor of rice wine vinegar and would balance the richness of our prosciutto-wrapped chicken.

We’ll have others moving in and out of our beer list over the summer; you’ll have to ask your server how best to embark on your taste adventure!  🙂

Mermaids! Sailors! What?

This month’s Wine Walk on Delaware had Farmhouse employees in all their nautical finery — probably the two best outfits being sported by our dear Taylor and Haley, a sailor and mermaid, respectively.

That’s right.  We know how to throw a party here at The Farmhouse.  🙂

Memorial Day: We will be closed.

We will be closed on Monday, May 26th, in observance of Memorial Day.

We’ll resume for lunch service on Tuesday, May 27th.

Thank you, everyone!

May’s Wine Walk on Delaware — GrrrrrRRRREAT!

May’s Wine Walk on Delaware was a wonderful event!  Lots of people were here wandering the blocks between The Farmhouse (at the north end of Delaware) and the courtyard near the south end of the street, where artists and musicians enlivened the festivities.

The Farmhouse crew spiced things up again in our own special way with a new in-house theme — this time everyone was an animal and our manager du jour played the part of zookeeper.  Talk about herding a bunch of cats!  🙂

Thanks to everyone who came by for a sip and a chat; we look forward to seeing you again on the third Saturday in June!

Local Food + Local Lumber = A Win for KC!

Yesterday we had the privilege of catering the VIP reception and open house for the new Urban Lumber Company, a project of Missouri Organic.

Tim & Tony showing off the new sign for The Urban Lumber Co.

We had a beautiful buffet set up for the crowd, including roasted Spring veggie turnovers, fried green tomato sliders, Spring garlic stuffed goat cheese crisps, and smoked mushrooms on grilled French bread.  We rounded out the buffet with beautiful platters of olives and nuts, and local artisanal cheeses accompanied by our house-made crackers.  So delicious — and everything went beautifully with the McCoys brews on tap!  🙂

It was great to meet the diverse crowd of attendees throughout the evening — there were Woodworking Guild members, hobbyists, contractors and builders, fellow local-foodies, even a handful of firemen!

*ahem*

There were some amazing wood specimens on display, all milled at The Urban Lumber Co. — everything from Ash to Walnut — some with gorgeous live edges and some ready-to-go planks.  And the passion exhibited by the Missouri Organic and Urban Lumber Co. crews for the work they do was inspiring.  They’ve got some amazing projects going, and we look forward to partnering with them again in the future!

KCLLS Luau Madness!

Our dear friend, Katy Gondring, is in the running for the Midwest Chapter of the Kansas City Leukemia & Lymphoma Society‘s title of Woman of the Year, and we were thrilled when Katy asked us to help her throw the largest fundraising event of her campaign — a luau!  Fortunately, Chef Foust spent a few years in the Hawaiian Isles, so he’s quite familiar with the cuisine.  And he didn’t disappoint!  🙂

In addition to other traditionally Hawaiian tasty treats, Chef Foust roasted a beautiful pig (she took up half the dining room!) and served up beautiful pork cuts to a ravenous crowd…

Katy had some amazing prizes for her silent auction; the crowd was crazy for the Periodic Table beach towels!  Our Luau bartender, Margot, created an amazing rum punch for the event, and our good friends at The Photo Bus came by to help us document our grand time.  🙂

Thanks to all our volunteers and friends for helping make the Luau a great event — we had a wonderful time and we’re keeping our fingers crossed for Katy’s victory as KCLLS Woman of the Year!

Wine Walk on Delaware Season Opener!

The first Wine Walk on Delaware of 2014 is coming in exactly two weeks — on Saturday, April 19!  We hope you will join us and our neighbors for a lovely evening of good wine, talented artists, and live music.  The Farmhouse will be lending space on its patio to several of our crafty and artistic staff members, for a little shop we’re calling “Staff Craft” — there will be paintings by Katie Sparaco, jewelry and wood-burning art by Haley Searls, crocheted and sewn goodies by Season Burnett, Sarah Wright, and Lindsey Cavitt, beautiful handmade leather items by Katy Bird (Sandlot Goods), and more.

This month, the charitable beneficiary will be the KC Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Katy Gondring and Robert Hoops, two candidates to become KCLLS’s Woman and Man of the Year, are organizing a fundraising after-party in the courtyard at 5th & Delaware St. as well, so after you’ve enjoyed strolling along the block, sampling the various delicious wines on offer, and checking out our neighboring businesses, you can enjoy some good music, art, and goodies there — and come over to The Farmhouse for a good dinner after you’ve worked up an appetite with all that walking!

Tickets will be sold at four locations along Delaware Street the night of the Wine Walk, including at The Farmhouse’s patio.  There are more details on Wine Walk’s Facebook page (see link above); stay tuned as the final details are ironed out.  We look forward to seeing you!

Support Margot at Speed Rack KC!

margot-the-champion

Our lovely and talented bartender, Margot Thompson, will be competing this Sunday, April 6, at the Speed Rack bartending competition benefiting breast cancer research, education, and prevention!  This is Kansas City’s first time hosting this amazing event, and it’s to be at the Madrid Theatre in midtown KCMO!

margot-studying-hard

Margot has been studying up and practicing hard for the past couple of weeks — I think she’s ready!  Will you join our cheering section?  Information about the event and how to buy your tickets are at the Speed Rack KC page on Facebook.  We’ll save a seat for you!  🙂
